Gloucester Studios, Croydon
Whittaker Parsons has worked with a filmmaking collective to redevelop a former bike shop and workshop into a film studio & community space; to host art events and offer flexible studio spaces to practitioners and students.
The project is in a unique part of Croydon where residential lanes sit alongside light industrial sheds. The proposal consists of two elements separated by a courtyard. At the front, the existing shop and flat are refurbished and extended. Towards the rear of the site, a new building is inserted between the existing industrial sheds.
This building reflects its surroundings, utilising the typology of the industrial sheds. Once completed, the project will comprise a film studio, a gallery, and studio spaces on the ground floor. Living accommodation with access to private roof terraces will be located on the first floor and primarily used for artist residencies.
