21st Century homemaking in East London’s Woodgrange Conservation Area.

The homeowners

Our favourite part, probably for impact, is the kitchen and the extension—that's where we spend the most time, and that's what makes people go "wow" when they first come in. The kitchen is so light and functions brilliantly as well as being really beautiful. We love getting a glimpse of our sedum roof on the extension when we pass the window on the stairs. We also have a deep appreciation for our new family bathroom - the use of colour in there is really fun!

The existing house, while spacious, presented several challenges:

A cramped and poorly laid-out family bathroom; a generally dark atmosphere, with poor flow from one room to another and poor connection with the rear garden.

Whittaker Parsons were tasked with enhancing these areas while staying true to the villa’s historical roots.

The materials used for the single storey rear extension were carefully selected to blend with the original house’s character, yet still provide a modern twist. Reclaimed bricks, black-stained timber cladding, and a sedum roof give the home a fresh yet sympathetic new look, while dark brick pavers help transition the indoor space to the garden.

The design team drew inspiration from the original leaded glass panels of the front door, using its rich colour palette as a basis for the interior choices. The colours—red, yellow, royal blue, light green, pink, and orange—appear subtly throughout the space.

Whittaker Parsons transformed the villa into a bright, spacious home that fosters better family living and a strong connection with the outdoors.
